Anecdotal reports from some medical professionals suggest that injuries resulting from minimalist running have exploded over the past year or two. To a certain extent it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this were true. Runners are notorious for jumping on new trends and doing dumb things in their training, and the exuberance with which some have approached minimalist running is likely to be a big factor in causing these injuries.
It’s an interesting article and the conclusion is… who knows? There’s not enough evidence one way or another so further research is required.
If you’re thinking about giving barefoot running a try I suggest you do some research beforehand and most importantly, take it slow. I wouldn’t go on a long, hard run the first time I ran barefoot.
